Krakatau

Diving Krakatau with Immersion Quest

History

Let Immersion Quest take you to the wonders of Krakatua. Famed for its eruption on August 26th 1883, which sent ash and pumice rocketing 26 kilometers high and 6000 kilometers wide, Krakatua is now known as one of the best dive sites in the greater Jakarta area.

The eruption was heard from Myanmar to Australia and caused huge tsunamis which destroyed some 167 villages in Sumatra and Java and killed more than 35,000 people. The original caldera collapsed upon itself, leaving three islands remaining of what was originally its rim: Sertung, Panjang and Rakata. In 1928, Anak Krakatau appeared. This fledgling island has now reached 240 meters in height.

Logistics

Located in Sunda Strait, between Sumatra and Java, Krakatau is easily accessible from Jakarta. The first step is to drive 1.5-2 hours to Anyer/Carita port. The drive depends on who is behind the wheel and, as always, on traffic, which can sometimes be quite heavy as there are several congested traditional markets on the way.

There are lots of boats for charter in Anyer/Carita to Krakatau: fast and slow boats, big and small boats, boats with crew who know the area well and those that do not. Immersion Quest will always suit your dive trip to your desires. Our local expertise and experience is very useful here. A fast boat can reach Krakatua in about two hours, while a slow boat might take six. Speeds also vary due to weather conditions which can sometimes be very rough. Strong winds can make the boat ride bumpy.

Diving

The diving in Krakatua is the best in the area as Krakatau’s sites offer a variety of underwater topography from slopes to walls and from reef to seasonal pelagic fishes. Dive sites include Batu karang setra, Sea fan, Sertung and Pintu 1. Immersion Quest takes all levels of divers to Krakatua. We are confident and comfortable with the sites and can thus offer divers sites that correspond to their experience levels. Current and visibility can change drastically, even during a dive, which make it vital that you dive with an experienced and trustworthy dive operation like Immersion Quest. Visibility in Krakatau can vary from 5 to 20 meters. The current can reach more than 1 knot in the roughest conditions.

Surface Intervals

Your surface intervals in Krakatau are very rewarding as divers can climb the sandy slope of the active Anak Krakatau volcano. Non-divers will also delight in the view from the top of Anak Krakatau, a vista of islands and ocean.

Krakatau is an ideal weekend trip for its easy access and unique sites. Immersion Quest will show you all it has to offer!
